Many people researching the Germans from Russia have compiled and published works that would benefit others. The problem, until this page was launched in 1997, had been getting out the word on what's available. This page is designed to put compilers in contact with people who might be interested in what they've done.

Search by category:

General, Families, Volhynia, Volga, Bessarabia, Canada and United States.

This list is NOT open to commercial outlets. It is only for individuals who have made some of their work available to the rest of us. And please: Respect the fact that these people have spent a lot of time and money producing these works. Don't be insulted if they aren't willing to do free lookups or provide free photocopies.

In general, assume that a Canadian address means the price is in Canadian dollars, and U.S. address means the price quoted is in U.S. dollars. If you are interested in anything on this list, please contact the person listed, not Genealogy Unlimited.

General

Index of Die Welt Post: 1916 to 1922
Compiled by Gerda Stroh Walker. Die Welt Post was a German-language newspaper printed in Nebraska for Germans from Russia. It contained much news from Russia, the Volga area in particular. Many people sent in letters from their relatives living in that area; these letters detail the terrible famine years. Often they also mention family names and dates. There was also news about the work of famine relief for them by their relatives in the U.S. and Canada, by the government, and by religious and private factors. The book details how you can get copies of the news articles from either AHSGR or the Nebraska State Historical Society. The compiler was International Chairman for Genealogy on the board of The American Historical Society for Germans from Russia.
242 pages, with more than 4,270 entries.
Price: $20.00 US plus $3.00 postage.

Proceeds will be used to pay for more research and printing.

From Despair To Deliverance
By Katharine Sylvester, who says: "We fled Russia in 1929, crossing the frozen Amur River in February of 1929 and were stranded as it were in China for a year. All immigration quotas were closed in North America. God in his Miraculous ways provided a way of deliverance for us and we came to the United States via Japanese ship to Angel Island, San Francisco in April of 1930. I wrote this book for the benefit of our family so they would never forget the privileged of freedom." Incredible journey of the Rogalsky family.

Part I, Jacob J. Dyck, Am Trakt to America, A History and Genealogy For The Descendants of Jacob J. Dyck and Marie G. Harder by D. Frederick Dyck.
Am Trakt was a Mennonite settlement on the Volga River near Engels. Part I not only tells the story of Jacob J. Dyck, it traces the history of the religious movements which culminated in the formation of the Mennonite religion. Research on the history of the family names provided information on the origins of the family in Germany and the Low Countries, the emigration to the Vistula Delta southeast of Danzig in West Prussia. Jakob Dyck went to Am Trakt about 1855 and it was here his son, Jacob J. Dyck, was born in 1881. Jacob left Russia in 1907 and came to Kansas in America where his stepbrother, Peter Penner, had gone some years earlier. There is much Claassen and Harder history, too, as well as information on other family lines.
Part II, Sixty Years of Silence The Dyck Family in Soviet Russia by Alice Sitler Dyck and The Memoirs of Gustav Dyck Translated by Herbert C. Dyck, Edited by Alice Sitler Dyck.
Tells what happened to those who remained in Russia. Some contact was maintained with family members in Kansas for a time after the Russian Revolution in 1917 but after 1930 nothing was heard until 1990 when contact was made with a cousin, Johannes "Hans" Dyck, in Omsk, Siberia. Upon his death not long after, a correspondence began with Hans' younger brother, Gustav near Novosibirsk. Gustav moved to southern Germany in 1994 and personal visits ensued. Part II also includes the memoirs of Gustav Dyck and his years in slave labor camps in Russia as well as a biographical sketch of Hans who spent years in the slave labor mines of Kolyma, the coldest inhabited places on earth. There are appendices which may give some persons new information concerning the fate of their relatives or loved ones who were living in Am Trakt in the years after the Revolution. Maps.
Copious photographs (B/W and Color), 389 pages.
Price: $35 plus $4 S/H Softcover
